Ask ten runners why they got a blister and most will shrug. Bad luck. Wrong day. Something about that shoe. But blisters don't happen at random, and treating them as chance is what keeps people repeating the same mistake.
A friction blister is mechanical. Every stride, your skin moves sideways against your sock while the deeper tissue stays put. That repeated back-and-forth is called shear, and it's the actual culprit — not vertical pressure, which is what most people assume. Enough shear cycles and the layers of your skin separate, fluid fills the gap, and you have a blister.
Moisture accelerates the whole process. Wet skin experiences higher friction against surfaces, which intensifies the mechanical stress on the outer skin layer during movement. That's why blisters cluster on hot days, in humid weather, and late in long runs — sweat has had time to accumulate and your skin has gone soft.
So you've got two variables: shear and moisture. Both are measurable. Both are addressable. Neither is luck.
